           What is Karma?
Karma is a measure of the kind of energy which our soul emanates during a lifetime through our focus on some thoughts over others.

Our soul is a non-physical being. It is in an energy form. Hence, our soul cannot take any physical action. As souls, beings  of energy; we cannot touch or see the physical aspect of reality except through the energy underlying it. For example, when we make love or read a book or steal, our soul only receives the energy which emanates during the act, be it positive or negative.
Energy is released through the feelings contained in our thoughts. When actions are taken by our body as a follow up of our thoughts, we, as the soul, receive electric impulses through the feelings generated during the action.
Every action follows a thought and therefore, every action entails a feeling.
Feelings are created by and create electric impulses in the body. In response to these electric impulses, our soul raises or lowers its frequency or speed of vibration. The more positive the soul frequency, the more successful we feel in achieving happiness.

(For more details, please refer to the book – Creation of Happiness: The Energy War , a soul’s perspective )

In brief, it can be said that the soul participates in the action taken only through the kind of feelings, the person engages in during, before and after the act. The soul does not dance, drive or read by itself. The body does the actions. The feeling or intention chosen upon before the action is taken, sets the kind of energy cycle the act will emit for the soul.

Feeling positive while doing the act generates a positive energy cycle and feeling negative while doing the act generates a negative energy cycle. In other words, if the action is taken with a positive intention, it would create further positive energy; whereas if the action is enacted with a negative feeling behind it, it would lead to generation of more negative energy.

There is no action we take which is without a feeling entailed. Even the act of breathing has a feeling entailed in it because we are feeling positive or negative in our thoughts while indulging in breathing. Hence, be it the routine activities of eating, drinking, bathing, studying or doing our job, we create karma with each action we take.
Positive karma is created when our motive behind an act is neutral or positively expectant that the act would help us increase happiness in some form. Negative karma is created when our motive is based on fear of disapproval, and the act creates sadness in some form, for ourselves or others.

Whether a positive karmic cycle emerges or a negative karmic cycle emanates depends on the average energy released.

Hence, our actions can create positive karma and spread happiness in our lives only if we think more happy thoughts than sad thoughts while doing our work.

The soul which feels predominantly sad/unhappy loses faith in God and cannot believe that happiness can exist.
It loses patience and perseverance necessary to transform happy feelings into physical reality. So, it takes short cuts to manifest its desires like cheating self or another, stealing, killing, using bribes and manipulation which make it focus more on feeling negative internally.
Negative feelings create negative impulses in the body radiating negative energy in the soul’s life. All such acts taken with a focus on the negative create negative karma. We internally compromise on our own happiness by taking away happiness from others through negative acts.

Incurring negative karma by feeling compromised, as souls, in order to achieve our external desires fast, delays our soul from evolving its frequency to positive. By failing to raise its frequency, our soul fails in achieving its purpose of life. The energies we focus on multiply. As a result, the soul incurring negative karma co-creates a negative world for itself through its focus on the negative.

·         Some common questions regarding Karma

Do acts of violence lead to negative karma?
Usually, most acts using violence constitute negative karma. However, all acts using violence cannot qualify as negative karma because it is the intention/cause behind the act which determines whether negative karma is generated or not. For example, killing another soul to prove one’s power would create negative karma, but killing another soul in self-defence or to prevent further creation of negative energy would not.
Violence is only a tool for reinforcing an idea. It is the idea which would create karma for the soul. Positively intended violence can even lead towards creation of positive energy, and hence, create positive karma for the soul.
Our soul does not feel physical hurts. It only perceives the energy of the hurt viz. the emotional pain accompanying the violence. Usually, the emotional trauma accompanying violence is more intense than with verbal abuse. But, if verbal abuse is scheming, it can hurt as much as violent acts. Hence, emotional abuse can create as much negative karma as physical abuse.

·         How is Karmic debt calculated?

Karma accumulates over life-times. A person’s karma in the present life is determined by the average quality of energy he contributes by his thoughts, words or actions, in the universe, over a period of life-times.
Metaphorically explaining, if we view one life as a video-game, then karma is the number of points we lose or win while playing the game. The points of the player or the karma of the soul add up as the soul moves from one life to the next, and get carried over to each new life.

Just as the player needs to overcome  the obstacles in the video-game and win positive points to reach the end of the game victorious, our soul has to make up for its lost karmic points or negative karma to move up on the scale of evolution.
Till the player gets positive points and neutralizes the negatives, it cannot win the game.
Likewise, we have to repay our karmic debt for achieving our destination/dreams of life, as planned as souls.
The negative points have to be neutralized by obtaining a higher number of positive karmic points .Positive karma helps the soul achieve a positive energy balance, necessary to find happiness.

For instance, if a soul has been a killer in one life and a saint in another, it is the overall balance of karma which would affect its stage of evolution at any one point.
In other words, the person’s karmic debt in his present life would equal the amount of negative energy he created in the life of the killer, minus the amount of positive energy he created in the life of the saint.
If the soul has incurred - minus10 points in the killer’s life and + plus 8 points in the saint’s life, his present karmic debt would be – minus 2. Till the karmic debt is not cleared, the negative energy would not transcend into positive. The soul would evolve to the next higher plane of the game or evolution, only when his karmic debt is cleared.

In other words, obstacles would block the player’s progress in the present level of the game till the player is able to overcome them, and pass on to the next level of the game.

Since, karma is a measure of energy, for negative karma to be cleared, it is necessary to create neutral or positive energy in its place in our own life and in the lives of others. However, it is not necessary to heal the same number of souls as we may have harmed. It is only necessary to create the same quantum of positive energy as the quantum of negative energy we created, so as to neutralize the negative.

Hence, if the person carrying the karmic debt can make even one person very happy, it may balance his/her negative karma against several people.

However, the reverse is equally true. A person can create huge amounts of negative karma by making one person severely unhappy, even if this person has been creating positive karma for several others.
As a religious verse says “If you heal one soul, you heal the whole mankind; and if you hurt one soul, you hurt the whole mankind “.

·         Does Social service help in clearing negative karma?

Creation of positive energy by focusing on positive feelings and actions, without harming others, is a sure method of clearing karma, and healing suffering. But, focusing on positive actions while feeling negative within may not lead to repayment of karma because the action, by itself, would not be counted at the soul’s level of existence. Only feelings matter to the soul’s energy cycle.
Being pre -dominantly positive within while taking actions only can help to repay karma. Joy, peace and happiness are positive energies and cannot come in our lives when we feel predominantly negative, irrespective of our external acts.

Thus, activities like social service and praying done for repayment of negative karma, would not always lead to creation of happiness in one’s life, if the focus of the person is more on negative thoughts than positive on an average .

Like, if we pray out of fear, then the prayer would multiply fear in our life not joy. Praying would connect us to God only when we do not feel negative. God is energy of high positive frequency and cannot reach our soul frequency if it is negative. Praying works when it helps us attain thoughtless states or positive states of mind.

According to Julie Soskin, author of ‘How psychic are you? ‘-- ‘The karmic laws of cause and effect act on you every second of your life... If possible, what we create in this life, it is better to heal in this life itself rather than carry it forward to another life. The more the dirt, the stickier it gets. ’

•           Learning karmic lessons for the soul is like learning to walk is for the toddler.
Karma helps in spiritual growth as it helps our soul understand the cause and effect relationships between the kind of energies it creates and the kinds of energies it attracts.
It makes our soul realize that if it makes another soul feel like a victim, it has to undergo the same feeling itself at some point .In this process, our soul is forced to learn its soul lessons, and evolve emotionally upwards on the soul dimensional scale.

Negative karma gets created when the soul is unable to pass a soul test or learn a soul lesson.

A negative karmic debt is like a mistake committed while giving a test which has to be rectified in order to pass the test with good grades. When our soul does not learn its soul lessons, we create negative energy in place of the positive energy we would have created by passing the soul test. An erring soul, i.e. the soul who creates negative karma is said to sin.

Sinning or making mistakes is not an insurmountable crime from the soul’s perspective, for which one has to suffer in hell for eternity!
Our soul learns by making mistakes. When we sin to feel happy and do not become happy with the outcome we manifest, we realize overtime that our method was not the right one for achieving happiness.

Hence, committing a sin is like falling on a step while trying to climb up the ladder of soul evolution to reach a higher level of happiness.   We may lose balance in our hurry to go up fast but we cannot stop moving up because we fell on the way.

Metaphorically, if we compare a young soul to a toddler, then a soul sins in the same way as the toddler falls while learning to walk. It is with experience that the toddler attains its balance of walking.
Similarly, it is with evolution that the soul understands which of its acts create positive energy for itself at the soul level, and which acts create negative energy.

The toddler cries because it gets hurt while falling in the process of learning to walk. It gets hurt because it has not yet learnt to walk.
But, the toddler’s suffering continues only until it masters the art of walking, as once it knows how to walk, it does not need to fall.
Also, feeling positive by feeling loved and encouraged plays a very important role in healing the toddler’s hurt while it learns to walk. The toddler gets comforted when it falls by loving adults around it.

Similarly, our soul suffers if it sins or makes mistakes in the process of finding ways to achieve its desired purpose of life.
Our soul’s suffering continues only until it learns how to achieve the desired happiness while feeling positive with the method chosen, because when we grasp the right balance, we learn how to walk with stability without tripping on short cuts.
Energies multiply by being focused upon and when we focus on feeling the joy of work and being loved while being success -oriented, we multiply the positivity in our lives.

·         How can we prevent the need to sin?

Essentially, to prevent our need to take actions which we consider as sinful, it is necessary to understand the feeling behind a desire than focus on the external form of the desire.
Desire comes from the soul level and has to be understood from that level, itself and not purely from an external, physical or materialistic level.

For example, it is important to know that we desire money to attain happiness in some material form through it. Instead of desiring money only for the sake of it, we need to be aware that our core intention is to be happy from the money we receive. And happiness may not come in only by earning money, buying goods or cars or jewels.
It would come in when we feel happy with the choices we make in life because energies within our mind multiply to create our future. If we don’t feel happy within our mind, our external joys or successes will not help us de-stress.

Happiness usually entails feeling loved or desired. Earning money by sinful means, or eating extra fatty foods or indulging in loveless sex or in drugs or alcohol excessively may not compensate for not feeling loved and accepted.

That is why we sometimes subconsciously say we are sinning when we eat fatty foods because we know that they lead us to feel unhealthier than satisfied over the day. Whenever we devolve instead of evolving, we say we are sinning because our conscience kicks us from within and stress rises.

By  understand that we feel happy when we feel loved or appreciated, we become aware that our soul desire is to feel appreciated through any actions we take. If our actions do not make us feel loved from within, as souls, they do not help our soul feel positive.

We would feel happy only if we do not feel more negative /unloved while doing that act. Otherwise, the negative energy focused upon would multiply more than happiness.
Like, a prostitute may use her body to earn money but she may not feel happy by having sex without feeling loved. She may feel used and thrown, and hence, the money she earns may not compensate for her loss of happiness.

To prevent the need to sin, it is important to choose the path of work carefully such as to ensure that the intention behind working creates more happiness for self and others than the negative energy emanating as a result of having to work.

If we are compromising ourselves in the work we do or in the relationships we are in, we sin/devolve our soul frequency out of fear of survival. Just as eating pizza only satisfies immediate hunger but does not help in losing weight or in keeping the body healthy, work done to cool down immediate pressures may not help in achieving the soul’s purpose of incarnation.

Any advanced soul realizes that taking shortcuts to happiness creates more negative energy than positive in the long run, but the young, inexperienced soul does not.
Like the toddler, the young soul loses its balance and falls often. Had Dev realized that killing his king for money could not help him buy happiness, he would not have killed. Instead, he would have focused on finding a better route to manifest his desires. By killing for money, he not only lost his life but also got caught in a negative loop of getting betrayed for life-times.

The process of soul evolution takes its course, like physical maturation does. Just as a toddler can only be supported while learning to walk but cannot be forced into learning quickly, a soul cannot be forced into evolving.
When the toddler reaches the right maturational age and physical fitness level, it starts walking, without falling, automatically. It intrinsically does not lose balance anymore.

Similarly, the soul experiences trial and error situations, usually, over several life-times before learning how to achieve its purpose of life without creating negative karma. Thus, in the process of repaying karma, or learning from mistakes, our soul becomes advanced.

•           Karma forms the syllabus of a life-time
Diane Stein, the author of ‘Essential Energy Balancing’, writes - ‘Karma is pain carried over lifetimes. It is woven into our mind-grid when the soul plans birth in a human body. It forms the belief system the person is born with and which needs to be changed or evolved as part of soul evolution. Each incarnation gives the soul a chance to experience, grow and learn in a different physical body. Karmic patterns carry over several life-times, circumstances and situations, till the negative energy is transcended into positive.’

Thus, karma forms the syllabus of a life-time. It decides the kind of negative emotions we, as souls, want to overcome in one life-time. Just as a course syllabus entails the subjects and the problems the student has to understand to move to a higher grade, our soul’s life plan entails the kind of emotional lessons of maturity it needs to imbibe, to understand happiness.

A pattern of recurring problems is usually, karmic, as they occur due to the soul testing itself. If the soul is unable to learn the lessons in that life, the test passes to the next life.
When the soul is able to use a difficulty as a means of evolving to a higher level of consciousness, it succeeds in transcending its karmic debt into positive energy.

For example, I had a client who was deeply in love with a man and he was in love with her but they could not communicate with each other. We found that the reason was that they had been responsible for each other’s death and misery in previous lives. In two lives, she had betrayed him accidently as he was a soldier and she was from an enemy camp. In other few lives, they had fought and he had left her in anger while going for wars. Then, he had died in the wars while she had lived alone waiting for him to return. The negative energies they had created for each other made them subconsciously afraid of being together again.
In the present life, due to some mis-understandings, the girl felt betrayed emotionally, as severely as he may have felt betrayed at the point of death in the past lives.
(The soul does not recognize death of the body. It only understands the emotional aspect associated with death, as the soul does not die, by itself. ) Avenging a physical death with an emotional death was karmic balancing on the soul’s part but made both of them feel rejected by each other in their present lives.
They started pretending indifference to each other in anger.
Both of them had to break a subconscious cycle wherein they usually parted. This cycle could break only if instead of becoming the victim or abuser, one of the souls chose not to get provoked by the other . They had to learn to let go and focus on feeling positive while in love, instead of feeling judged or betrayed again.
But, feeling happy in imagination while assuming rejection in reality was a tough challenge for both, which required a belief in the process of visualization, above their self imposed exiles.
If they could presume the other loved, without asking for overt physical evidence, the gates of communication could open but each kept waiting for the other.

Another example – Overcoming the karmic cycle of cheating and being cheated

Overcoming any karmic cycle requires an inner drive to lead a happier life than in the present. If one enjoys focusing on the troubles in the present, and does not hold back revengeful feelings, soul learning cannot happen.
Usually, if one gets cheated in a relationship, it is because one has cheated the erring spouse in a past life or someone else in the same life. If you create the energy of betrayal, it would circle back to you karmically even if it’s not from the same person.
The karmic cycle of cheating would continue till one gets over the desire to cheat another soul for whatever reason. Breaking a karmic cycle does not mean that the soul should suffer the trauma of being cheated, feel humiliated or feel guilty that it is paying for its sins from past lives. It only means that the soul has to shift its focus to feeling non-negative/detached.

To break the karmic cycle, the need to take revenge should be defeated as it usually creates negativity.
Instead, the soul can become indifferent to the spouse and move on into another relationship by realizing they have differences without feeling unnecessarily sad or bitter.

The victim’s focus has to be on learning the soul lesson rather than on suffering. That way the suffering may continue but for a shorter time.
The suffering or the experience of difficult circumstances continues because the negative energy once created takes its own time to get transcended into positive, even after the soul starts focusing on the positive soul lesson. During this period, negative emotions keep resurfacing.
The reality we experience in our present is a manifestation of the feelings we have been focusing upon in our past. The process of creation of reality is similar to the creation of a building. A building, once built, even if undesirable, would take time to get demolished; and there will be an intermediate phase before a new building can be built in its place.

The soul starts the process of learning its karmic lessons when it makes its choices in order to feel happy, and lets go off all beliefs which prevent it to be stuck in redundant phases of growth.

Once the soul lesson is learnt, the soul forgives the other soul by understanding him/her as being less evolved, or caught up in a negative phase of life.

We do not get difficulties which we do not have the ability to overcome. We plan our tests ourselves, as souls. And the difficulty of the tests varies with the level of soul evolution. An advanced soul would not get as simple tests as a young, inexperienced soul would because that would not help evolve its consciousness. So, the more advanced we are, the more difficulties we face, and the greater we can evolve in terms of achieving levels of happiness.

The core realization involved in karmic repayment is that the soul hates that behaviour the most which it has indulged in the past and despised itself for engaging in it; like Dev said he hated being betrayed whereas he himself had betrayed in a past life. This is an observable pattern in past life therapy sessions.
When we forgive the other soul, for abusing, we also forgive ourselves for the same mistake done by us in a past life. Once we forgive ourselves, we stop attracting that kind of negative energy.  We let go of that life, and let ourselves evolve to a higher frequency, where we can achieve our purpose of life through the route the soul wants us to follow.

When we compare life to a video-game, karmic difficulties are like levels in a video-game. They help the driver improve his balance. The driver keeps failing in obstacles till he learns to overcome them.
Once he learns to balance, he wins the game. .Akin to the driver winning the game, once the soul lesson is learnt, our soul achieves its destination in that aspect of life. Now, even if a similar obstacles comes which made it fall/feel negative earlier, the soul passes through it without letting it affect its progress.

·         Washing away the Karmic debt

Karmic balancing is a necessary ingredient of soul evolution, and is meant to help the soul evolve, not suffer. Karma does not intend to cause suffering. It helps in learning life lessons, from the soul’s or energy perspective. But, lessons cannot be learnt till we correct the previous mistakes.
Like, until we wash a dirty glass, we cannot drink clean water from it, we have to clear our negative thinking patterns for positive energies to come in our lives.

Negativity arises due to the karmic mistakes we have made in the past and goes as we evolve to a higher plane of existence, by choosing to create a positive karmic cycle. A positive karmic cycle can come in only with a disciplined shift in our thought cycle towards focusing on peace and happiness in reality or in imagination.. As long as our focus has been and is on feeling worried, we would multiply negative energies in our lives wherever we go.

If there seems no way out of difficult circumstances, the most practical way to transcend negative karma is to view it as just energy and get detached from it. Being detached means being non-emotional, and taking the circumstances mechanically as challenges to be overcome.

Through detachment, instead of focusing on whether our life as good or bad, we would use it as a learning experience and learn from past mistakes. That would prevent further reinforcement of the energy of negative thought.
When the negative energy is no longer reinforced or fuelled by our focus, it would no longer multiply. Negativity would lose its grip and the negative cycle would automatically break.

So, by remaining thoughtless through our problems, the karmic debt would get washed away.
The pending soul lessons would be mastered as there would be an automatic shift to focusing on overcoming problems by remaining tolerant, compassionate or detached/neutral . As explained in part 1, since being neutral is a higher energy vibration than being negative ( 0 > - ) , it would clear negative blocks and pave the way for feeling positive and thus, multiply positivity in life..

However, becoming detached may not directly help us in achieving our life purpose, as souls. To achieve our desires, we would have to focus on staying positive so that we multiply the positive energies sin our lives. Being detached by staying thoughtless would multiply the energy of staying thoughtless, not of manifesting dreams.

So, we need to use detachment for washing away previous karma  while primarily remaining focused on feeling good through the ups and downs of life.

Being detached is like erasing mistakes we have made in a test paper as it clears the negative energy balance of the past. But, the test of creation remains and we still have to fill it with the correct answers. The test of life has to be given again till cleared.
Therefore, it is better to learn detachment while going through everyday pressures of life than by escaping from life’s responsibilities. The idea is to not feel hurt by detaching from the negativity causing situation, but not to run away from the negativity.

Very often, rising out of negativity necessitates defying conventional wisdom following which makes us feel sad or worried. We have to let go of beliefs and values which we stick to because of habit, and instead make choices which seek truth from the soul’s perspective of eternal life.

The soul tests have to given in order to evolve to a higher level of happiness. They cannot be avoided or neglected as non-existent because they keep coming in the form of negative feelings. The correct answers are those choices of life which make us feel happy from within, in order to evolve, as souls.

In Julie Soskin’s book ‘How Psychic are you?’ she explains that -‘The law of karma says that every thought and feeling you direct onto others, at any time, will react on you in equal measure. It is a force which attracts exactly what the soul needs to progress.’
